In May of 1993, Matthew D. Kaplan earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He majored in History and graduated Cum Laude.

In December of 1996, Mr. Kaplan graduated from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, California. While at Loyola, he was the President of the International Law Society. He also completed externships for The Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law and the Western Law Center for Disability Rights.

In 1997, Mr. Kaplan became a Clerk for the Multnomah County Courthouse. He worked in many different departments until he was hired by the Honorable Judge Sidney Galton. While clerking at the courthouse he learned the ins-and-outs of various types of hearings including summary judgments, civil commitments, and jury trials.

In 1998, Matthew D. Kaplan began his career as a Trial Attorney working for the Southern Oregon Public Defenders, in Medford, Oregon. After a year and a half in Medford, Mr. Kaplan was hired as an Associate Trial Attorney by the firm of Squires & Lopez where he defended the rights of people accused of committing crimes that ranged from traffic citations to Measure 11 felonies.

In early 2003, Mr. Kaplan opened his own law practice focusing on defending those charged with Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants. His goal is to provide his clients with thorough aggressive representation. He believes in giving his clients the time and consideration needed to help them make informed decisions and get them through what may be the most difficult time in their lives.

Matthew D. Kaplan is a member of the Oregon State Bar Association, the Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, the Oregon Trial Lawyers Association, and the American Association For Justice. He also serves on the Advisory Board for Oregon Safe Kids.

Mr. Kaplan resides in Southwest Portland with his wife, two sons, and two dogs. He is a former instructor in Taekwon-Do and earned a 2nd degree black belt. In his spare time Mr. Kaplan enjoys snowboarding and hacking his way through a golf course.
